Report: Rockets monitoring Mitchell's future with Cavs

The Houston Rockets are among the teams interested in Cleveland Cavaliers guard Donovan Mitchell, sources told The Athletic's Kelly Iko.

The Rockets have been monitoring his situation for months, Iko adds.

The franchise could package the No. 3 pick, as well as additional draft assets and young players, in order to acquire the guard or another star-level player. Houston has had informal talks with teams interested in acquiring the draft selection.

Mitchell has one more season left on his deal before he can decline his $37.1-million player option for the 2025-26 season. The 27-year-old is also eligible to sign an extension this summer.

The Cavaliers were eliminated in the second round of the playoffs by the Boston Celtics in five games. Mitchell missed the final two contests of the series but averaged 29.6 points on 48% shooting in the postseason.

The Rockets improved by 19 wins between the last two seasons but missed the playoffs for the fourth straight campaign. They finished 11th in the West with a 41-41 record.

Houston is likely to pick up options for veterans Jae'Sean Tate, Jeff Green, Jock Landale, and Steven Adams, according to Iko. That would put the Rockets $9.5 million under the salary-cap tax threshold, allowing them to use the full four-year, $55.3-million non-taxpayer midlevel exception.

The Rockets are also interested in signing free-agent guard Malik Beasley for his shooting and floor spacing. Beasley, a career 39% shooter from deep, is garnering interest from the Orlando Magic and Golden State Warriors as well.
