Report: Popovich away indefinitely due to undisclosed illness
The San Antonio Spurs will be without head coach Gregg Popovich indefinitely, ESPN's Shams Charania reports.
The club announced Popovich won't travel for its next two contests due to an undisclosed illness, according to Tom Orsborn of the San Antonio Express-News. The veteran coach is OK and just needs rest, a source told Orsborn.
Popovich missed Saturday's 113-103 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves. Assistant coach Mitch Johnson served in his place and is expected to stay in that role while Popovich is absent, per Charania.
The 75-year-old Popovich has spent 29 seasons with the Spurs, becoming the NBA's career leader in victories with 1,390. He's also won 170 playoff games and five championships with San Antonio.
Popovich signed a five-year, $80-million contract to remain with the franchise in 2023.
The Spurs are 3-3 on the season, winning their last two games. They face the Los Angeles Clippers on Monday and the Houston Rockets on Wednesday.
