Pierce: 2008 Celtics squad would 'break' current team mentally
Paul Pierce believes the Boston Celtics' 2008 championship-winning team would have the edge over the 2024 squad if they ever squared off.
The Hall of Famer backed his old team Monday during an appearance on "The Dan Le Batard Show," highlighting their ability to get under opposing teams' skins.
"I don't know. We don't know," Pierce responded after Le Batard declared the current Celtics better than the 2008 squad. "It's damn close. I ain't gonna lie, this team is really good. Really good. But I will tell you this: Our team, I don't know, we knew how to break teams mentally. So what we lacked in skill versus them, we had with will."
The 2007-08 Celtics finished the regular season atop the Eastern Conference standings with a 66-16 record and went on to face the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA Finals, defeating them in six games to capture the franchise's first title in 22 years.
This year's Celtics, who are coming off a championship of their own, currently sit second in the Eastern Conference at 17-4.
