Fox felt fit with Wemby, Spurs' youngsters would be 'spectacular'
De'Aaron Fox believes he found the perfect match in the San Antonio Spurs' young core, headlined by the 7-foot-3 Victor Wembanyama.
"It's a very unique opportunity. Not many guys come around like that," Fox told reporters Wednesday at his first Spurs shootaround, according to team play-by-play announcer Jacob Tobey. "I think, not just him but everybody else, I felt like the fit would be spectacular, and I felt like I had a lot of years left to play.
"Some people would say, 'You kind of expedited that process,' but you look at a team like OKC where outside of Shai (Gilgeous-Alexander) and (Alex Caruso), everybody else is pretty much on a rookie contract - I feel like we could do the same thing."
Fox officially landed with the Spurs on Monday following weeks of speculation that he preferred to land in San Antonio if the Sacramento Kings traded him. The Kings eventually worked out a three-team deal that satisfied the point guard's wishes and also netted them Zach LaVine from the Chicago Bulls.
Wembanyama credited the Spurs on Tuesday for making the deal, which required them to part with Zach Collins, Sidy Cissoko, and Tre Jones.
"It just shows that they're not here to waste time and they're willing to take the next step on time," Wembanyama said, according to ESPN's Michael C. Wright. "We're moving forward. I think it's a good step in the building of our future. I'm going to miss dearly my teammates."
Fox, who averaged 25 points, 6.1 assists, five rebounds, and 1.5 steals in 45 starts with Sacramento this season, is expected to make his Spurs debut Wednesday against the Atlanta Hawks.
