LeBron becomes 1st in NBA history to register 50K points
LeBron James continues to make history.
The Los Angeles Lakers star became the first player in NBA history to surpass 50,000 career points between regular-season and playoff games.
James reached the milestone with a 3-pointer in the first quarter of Tuesday's 136-116 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans, the seventh win in a row for the Lakers.
The 40-year-old entered the contest just one point shy of the feat. He now sits at 50,033 after finishing Tuesday's game with 34.
"I'm not gonna sit here and sugar coat it, it's a hell of a lot of points," James said postgame. "I'm super blessed to be able to put that many points up in the best league in the world, with the best players in the world over my career. it's pretty special."
Luka Doncic became the fourth Laker in franchise history to score 30-plus points and add 15-plus assists in the same game in the win, but it was the accomplishment of his teammate that wowed him after the buzzer.
"It's amazing, watching him do this stuff at this age it's just unbelievable," Doncic said. "50K points, I can't even explain how insane that is. He might get to 70K, you never know."
James was already first all time in combined points. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is second with 44,149, while the closest active player is Phoenix Suns forward Kevin Durant with 35,225.
James is also the NBA's all-time scoring leader in both the regular season and playoffs with 41,871 and 8,162, respectively.
James already passed 50,000 when counting his play-in tournament and NBA Cup points, but the league doesn't recognize those stats.
He entered Tuesday averaging 24.8 points, eight rebounds, and 8.6 assists in 55 appearances this season.
