Klay Thompson arrived in Dallas optimistic about a fresh start, but he may be starting to feel the effects of the Mavericks' recent struggles.
Thompson's father, two-time NBA champion Mychal Thompson, described his son's current situation as being "stuck in purgatory" on ESPN Los Angeles 710's "Mason and Ireland" show Wednesday.
"He thought with Luka (Doncic) and Kyrie (Irving) that they had a chance to get back to the Finals," Mychal said. "Obviously, Luka left. Then I told him, 'Well, when (Anthony Davis's) coming, you still got a chance to get to the Finals 'cause A.D.'s that good.' Then he's hurt. And then (Daniel) Gafford got hurt, then (Dereck) Lively got hurt. So yeah, Klay's stuck in purgatory right now, and if they hang onto the 10-seed, that will be the story of the year in the NBA. I think they're gonna lose 10 in a row."
Thompson joined the Mavs in July as part of a sign-and-trade with the Golden State Warriors, where he spent the first 13 seasons of his career and won four NBA championships.
The Mavs' injury woes worsened Tuesday with news that Irving suffered a torn ACL in his left knee and will reportedly be sidelined for the rest of the season.
Dallas sits 10th in the Western Conference standings at 32-31.
