Tre Johnson sidelined due to hip injury
Washington Wizards guard Tre Johnson sustained a strained hip flexor that will sideline him for the near future, head coach Brian Keefe said Monday, according to The Athletic's Josh Robbins.
"We'll know more here in a couple of weeks, but he's had a good start to the season for a guy who was playing through a lot of pain, averaging almost 12 points a game and close to 40% from three," Keefe said.
Keefe didn't go into detail about the recovery timeline for Johnson, citing team policy. Similar injuries typically keep players out of action for two-to-four weeks, according to Robbins.
The Texas product sustained a similar injury last year during his lone collegiate season. Washington has taken a cautious approach to his playing time dating back to Summer League in July.
The 19-year-old's minutes have dwindled over the past week since he suffered the injury. He sat out Saturday's loss to the Chicago Bulls.
Johnson is averaging 11.5 points, 3 rebounds, and 1.3 assists through 15 games.
Cam Whitmore and Corey Kispert are expected to see more minutes with Johnson out of the lineup. Rookie Will Riley could be in line to join Washington's rotation.
The Wizards (1-15) will look to snap their 14-game losing streak Tuesday against the Atlanta Hawks (11-7).
