Report: AD likely to undergo hand surgery, will miss several months

Dallas Mavericks star Anthony Davis is expected to undergo surgery to repair ligament damage in his left hand and will likely miss several months, sources told ESPN's Sham Charania.

Despite the injury, the Mavericks have renewed trade talks with multiple teams still interested in the 10-time All-Star ahead of the Feb. 5 deadline, Charania adds.

Davis' recovery timeline leaves open the possibility of a postseason return.

There's some optimism that Davis could come back at some point in March, even if he undergoes surgery, sources told NBA insider Marc Stein.

The 32-year-old exited the Mavericks' loss to the Utah Jazz last week after Lauri Markkanen made contact with his hand with under three minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.

Davis reportedly sought out multiple opinions before deciding how to address the issue.

Multiple injuries have marred Davis' tenure in Dallas following his acquisition from the Los Angeles Lakers in the blockbuster Luka Doncic trade in February 2025. The 2012 No. 1 overall pick has appeared in 29 games with the Mavericks.

Dallas is expected to build its roster around rookie Cooper Flagg as the club considers moving on from the five-time All-NBA standout. The Mavs are 5-15 with Davis out of the lineup during their 2025-26 campaign.

Davis is averaging 20.4 points, 11.1 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 1.7 blocks in 20 games this season.
