The New Orleans Pelicans hired Jamahl Mosley as their next head coach, the club announced Monday.

Mosley agreed to a five-year contract, sources told ESPN's Shams Charania. He spent the last five seasons as head coach of the Orlando Magic before being fired in early May.

The 47-year-old helped guide the Magic to three consecutive playoff appearances. However, Orlando failed to advance past the first round each time, and the team blew a 3-1 series lead over the No. 1 seed Detroit Pistons this postseason.

Mosley ended his Magic tenure with a 189-221 regular-season record in his first stint as an NBA head coach. He finished as the runner-up for the Coach of the Year award during the 2023-24 campaign.

New Orleans began targeting Mosley shortly after his firing, according to Charania. The two sides met in person last week at the draft combine.

The Pelicans fired head coach Willie Green in November following a 2-10 start. James Borrego, who was an associate coach under Green, was named the interim head coach for the remainder of the year. New Orleans finished 11th in the Western Conference with a 26-56 record, marking back-to-back campaigns in which the team failed to eclipse 30 wins.

New Orleans owns just one selection (No. 58 overall) in June's draft after trading its 2026 first-rounder last year to move up and select forward Derik Queen. Zion Williamson, whom the Pelicans selected first overall in 2019, is under contract through the 2027-28 campaign. The 25-year-old averaged 21 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 3.2 assists in 62 games this season.
