NBPA VP Roger Mason: LeBron, players will boycott 2014-15 season if Sterling's not removed

Roger Mason Jr. is set to make waves on Wednesday's episode of Jim Rome on Showtime, according to a press release from the network that also contains a clip from the interview segment.

During the interview, Mason, who is the vice president of the National Basketball Players Association, says that NBA players are prepared to boycott the 2014-15 NBA season if Donald Sterling remains in place as owner of the Los Angeles Clippers.

That includes the league's marquee star, two-time defending champion and four-time MVP LeBron James.

"I don't see how we're playing basketball," Mason said. "I was just in the locker room, three or four days ago, LeBron and I talked about it. He ain't playing if Sterling is still an owner."

Asked if the same would apply if ownership was transferred to Shelly Sterling, Mason said "There's no place for that family in the NBA."

Mason's statements put the league and players in somewhat of a tough area.

The league is working "expeditiously" to try and remove Sterling as owner, but the process is going to include a complicated legal battle - even though Sterling says "Whatever their decision is, I have to do it," he seems unconvinced he'll be removed, and his wife reportedly may make a legal claim of ownership, too.

Putting a deadline on the league, as Mason suggests here, may be unfair given the legal process ahead. With that said, it's possible that Mason and James, who said this week that "We don't feel like no one in his family should be able to own the team," are simply looking for the NBA to take the step of voting for his removal, after which the legal battle is just that, a legal battle in the background.

The interview will air at 9 p.m. ET on Showtime.

The NBA's Advisory Committee, meanwhile, met on Tuesday to receive an update on all matters Sterling and will reconvene next week.
