The NBA's all-time scoring leader is set to star in a documentary that will debut in early 2015 on HBO.

According to Inside the Lakers, the film will reveal the "complexity and genius" of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as it chronicles his life story both on and off the court.

"Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is a legendary figure and an American sports icon," said HBO president Ken Hershman in a statement. "While he has lived so much of his life in the media spotlight, his extraordinary story has never been explored in depth, and we are grateful to Kareem and his team for allowing us to bring this story to life."

Working on the documentary will be director Ron Yassen, Abdul-Jabbar's business manager Deborah Morales, and executive producer Mike Tollin, whose documentary on Hank Aaron earned an Oscar nomination in 1996.

Considering how media-shy Abdul-Jabbar is, the film should provide some great insight into chapters of his life that haven't been well documented.
