The Washington Wizards have reached an agreement on a three-year contract extension with head coach Randy Wittman, according to a report from The Washington Post.
An extension had been expected since the end of the playoffs, after Wittman led the Wizards to the second round of the playoffs following a successful 44-38 season. A press conference is expected to be held on Wednesday to officially announce the deal, which will be worth roughly $3 million annually.
Wittman has been the head coach of the Wizards since midway through the 2011-12 season, his third coaching gig in the NBA. Despite the success of the Wizards this season, he's generally considered a below-average coach, owning a career .367 winning percentage that ranks dead last among the 76 coaches to have coached at least 500 NBA games.
Still, owner Ted Leonsis said that Wittman "deserved" to be back after the playoff run, and a franchise that hasn't had coaching stability for some time may not want to tinker with a core that made the second round.
