Report: Rockets making 'all-out push' to land LeBron James in free agency
Did you enjoy The Decision? If so, you'll love this year's sequel.
According to Howard Beck of Bleacher Report, the Houston Rockets are looking to make a huge push to sign Miami Heat forward LeBron James, who has an opt-out clause to leave the Heat and become a free-agent this offseason.
There's one big hurdle in the Rockets' plan - they have no cap room to sign James. As it currently stands, the Rockets have roughly $64 million in salary commitments for 2014-15.
However, as Beck indicates, the Rockets are willing to clear the ledger by dumping salaries on teams with cap room. If they find takers for Jeremy Lin ($8.4 million cap hit), Omer Asik ($8.4 million), Donatas Motiejunas and Isaiah Canaan (~$2.3 million), the Rockets could conceivably carve out up to $19 million in cap space to entice James.
Signing James would be a huge boon for the Rockets, as they would boast three All-NBA players in their lineup. Both James and James Harden earned first-team honors last season, while Dwight Howard was named to the second team.
Last season, the Rockets finished with a record of 54-28, good for fourth in the Western conference. They lost to the Portland Trail Blazers in the first round of the playoffs.
Again, all of this is contingent on James opting out. There is a good chance he stays in Miami, as he qualified for four straight Finals alongside Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. He would be hard-pressed to leave behind so much success and move to the significantly tougher Western conference.
