The Atlanta Hawks selected Cape Verde center Walter Tavares with the No. 43 overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft on Thursday night.
As with most international prospects, the question with Tavares is whether or not he plans to come to the NBA right away. While it may make sense to stay overseas from a development standpoint, Tavares does some things that can help right now. Namely, he's an enormous body (7-foot-3 with a 7-foot-6 wingpsan) with great rebounding and shot-blocking instincts. He's going to be a zero on the offensive end for a while, but rim protection is always at a premium.
The Hawks have done well recently with international players, nabbing Pero Antic as a useful free agent and temporarily enjoying Gustavo Ayon before he succumbed to injury this season. Tavares is a much different player, and whether the Hawks look to bring him over could depend on how their offseason plays out.
