The Chicago Bulls announced the signing of point guard Aaron Brooks on Tuesday, giving them a solid third option behind Derrick Rose and Kirk Hinrich in their backcourt hierarchy.
The deal had previously been reported to be a one-year, fully guaranteed pact at the $1.15 million minimum for someone with Brooks' experience, but only $915,243 of that will count for salary cap and luxury tax purposes for the Bulls, per Sham Sports.
"It was about the opportunity,” Brooks said in a team release. “A great team with a great coach. They’ve had successful guards like me in the past. I’ve never played in the Eastern Conference. I’m excited for the challenge and something different."
A 29-year-old with six years in the NBA, Brooks could see his role expanded if Rose returns at a level below full health or suffers further injury. As it stands, his playing time may be minimal, though backup Hinrich can play some time at the two to help get Brooks some run.
Over 397 career games, Brooks has averaged 11.1 points and 3.4 assists, numbers that were trimmed to nine and 3.2, respectively, last season. Perhaps most importantly for the Bulls, the 6-foot Brooks owns a 36.8 percent career mark from long range.
