Despite Pierre Jackson suffering a ruptured Achilles at Orlando Summer League in early July, the Philadelphia 76ers have signed the soon-to-be-rookie to a one-year deal, according to a report from Mark Deeks later confirmed by CSNNW.
The deal is said to be for only one year, and the early speculation is that Jackson signed the "required tender" that teams must offer to players whose draft rights they own. On occasion, the players will sign those tenders, though it is somewhat rare. Contrary to that speculation, however, is that the deal is "mostly guaranteed."
It's also possible that the 76ers, with plenty of cap space and only seven guaranteed contracts officially on the books at present, are simply doing right by the player, who was hurt playing for them in the tournament. If that were entirely the case, however, you'd expect a team option year tagged on at the end to provide some value at a later date.
In any case, figures and specifics are sure to emerge shortly.
Acquired on draft night this season for the draft rights to Russ Smith, Jackson figured to be a reserve guard and microwave man off the bench for Philadelphia this season. The Achilles injury could keep him out for the entire season, which would be incredibly unfortunate since basketball fans spent the entire 2013-14 season hoping they'd get to see him, too.
Jackson posted on his Instagram account celebrating the signing with all of the hashtags:
