Dion Waiters: LeBron called me '4 or 5 days' before decision, 'Told me to be ready'

David Richard / USA Today Sports

Dion Waiters didn't necessarily know that LeBron James was coming home to the Cleveland Cavaliers but, like...you know. He knew.

The open-book shooting guard spoke with SLAM recently and revealed that James had tipped him off a little before announcing his signing. He didn't confirm anything, but he wanted Waiters to be ready in the event they were to be teammates in short order.

Here's Waiters:

We’ve talked. I actually talked with LeBron before he made his decision. He called me and just told me to be ready. Be ready. I talked to him four or five days before he made his decision. He just got on the phone and said I haven’t made my mind up yet but be ready.

I told him that I’m already working hard. I’ll be ready. And he said, I know, I know you are. Then a few days later I read the letter. I was just really excited for the city of Cleveland. I think the city, more than anybody, deserves this. They deserve to have LeBron coming back. I think the excitement is really back in Cleveland and I’m looking forward to being a part of that.

Waiters has already revealed he's watching game tape of Dwyane Wade to figure out how best to play the two alongside James, a position he is adamant he wants to start at for the team.

This is interesting in that there were previously few indications James let anyone in on his plans, even in this passive a manner, prior to his announcement. Sure, Wade thought he knew it was coming, but for the most part it was a situation that was kept very close to the chest. Perhaps it was a test - if so, Waiters clearly knows loose lips sink ships.

Meanwhile, poor Andrew Wiggins can't buy a shoutout or a call.
