Report: Former NBA player, afro enthusiast Josh Childress signs in Sydney

There was always a hope among basketball fans that Josh Childress could re-discover the groove he had prior to leaving the NBA for Greece in 2008. When he returned in 2010, so too did his trademark afro, one of the few endangered hairstyles in the league.

Unfortunately, Childress' second NBA go-round wasn't nearly as successful as his first, and the Stanford product now finds himself heading back overseas, having signed with the Sydney Kings in Australia.

This comes via a report from The Sydney Morning Herald:

Former NBA scoring machine Josh Childress has signed a one-year deal with the Sydney Kings and will play a major role in filling the hole left by fellow American Sam Young.

Sydney Kings coach Damian Cotter said he and head of basketball operations Tim Hudson were in conversation with Childress for three weeks before the signing, and know from their extensive research that he will fit perfectly into the squad. 

Cotter highlighted Childress' character as the key reason for his signing, saying "we're excited about the bloke we're getting."

While it's unclear what Childress will earn in Sydney, he's still being paid by the Phoenix Suns for the coming season, the final year of a five-year deal he signed with the team in 2010. The Suns used the league's amnesty provision on his contract in 2012, clearing his contract from the cap, but not the actual accounts payable ledger.

This past season, Childress managed just four games with the New Orleans Pelicans, failing to impress a year after doing the same with the Brooklyn Nets. It was a much different Childress that came back from Greece:
