Report: Warriors extend NBA legend Jerry West as executive board member

The Golden State Warriors have extended the contract of executive board member and NBA legend Jerry West, with his new deal keeping him with the organization through the 2016-17 season.

This news comes via the San Jose Mercury News, who also report that West had considered retirement earlier in the offseason due to a tumultuous 2013-14 for the Warriors. That tumult included head coach Mark Jackson reportedly trying to ban West from practices, and concluded with the eventual ouster of Jackson as coach.

Now 76 years old, West is a handy advisor to have around for general manager Bob Myers, who recently received a contract extension of his own. West was also said to be a driving force in the team's decision to hang onto Klay Thompson rather than include him in a package for Kevin Love.

An NBA Hall of Famer, West came out of retirement to join the Warriors in 2011, following notable stints at the helm of the Los Angeles Lakers and Memphis Grizzlies.
