Suns President lets Morris twins decide how to split extension money
The Suns locked Markieff and Marcus Morris up through the 2018-19 season on Monday, handing Markieff a four-year, $32-million extension and Marcus a four-year, $20-million extension - both of which will kick in next season.
But how each brother came to the terms of his contract is where the story gets interesting, according to Suns president of basketball operations Lon Babby.
"I did something I've never done before," Babby told SB Nation's Bright Side of the Sun. "Once we agreed on the amount of money, I gave them the first crack at how to divide it up."
Via Bright Side of the Sun:
"I didn't want there to be any disconnect," he explained. "What I knew would happen is that they are each the best advocate for the other one. So Markieff is going to be worried about what Marcus is getting and Marcus is going to be worried about Markieff. I didn't want to mess up that dynamic, so I gave them a chance and they came up with a good solution."
Markieff's deal will see him earn an average of $8 million per year, while Marcus's new deal will be worth $5 million per year, which adds up when you consider Markieff is the superior brother and will likely start ahead of Marcus at power forward this season.
That Marcus was able to take this into account when dividing up extension money is both honorable and impressive, as few players are as cognizant of their roles. Then again, it's probably a lot easier to make some concessions for your twin brother than for the average teammate.
