Clippers rule out adding Ray Allen, even if he decides not to retire
In late August, Los Angeles Clippers president and coach Doc Rivers indicated that he had been in contact with veteran free agent Ray Allen and that the team was set to make a run at adding him.
More than a month later, Allen still hasn't publicly disclosed whether he'll even return to the NBA for a 19th season. If he does, the Clippers are no longer an option, according to Rivers. Rivers said Wednesday that the team is deep enough at shooting guard entering the season, which would make Allen superfluous.
To help solidify the shooting guard spot behind J.J. Redick and Jamal Crawford, the Clippers drafted C.J. Wilcox and signed Chris Douglas-Roberts, who join Reggie Bullock as multi-position wings on the bench. Joe Ingles and Jared Cunningham are also in camp competing for the 15th roster spot.
With training camps open around the league, Allen's absence from the NBA landscape seems to suggest he won't return, or isn't in a rush to, anyway. The Cleveland Cavaliers and Washington Wizards are still believed to have interest in his services and could provide an in-season landing spot should they maintain the roster flexibility required to add another player.
