Waiters on best backcourt debate: 'I had to stir up something, you know me'
Washington Wizards shooting guard Bradley Beal may have made the initial comment that got the debate going, but Dion Waiters was more than willing to fuel the fire.
Who is the best backcourt pairing in the Eastern Conference? In the NBA? It's a difficult question to tackle, but just about every team, and fanbase, has responded that their guard pairing is better than every other.
Are Beal and his counterpart John Wall the best?
"Definitely," Beal said.
"Nonsense," Waiters said, suggesting he and fellow Cleveland Cavalier Kyrie Irving were the choice.
"We will see ..." Toronto Raptors two-guard DeMar DeRozan said, with a hearty laugh. (And he and Kyle Lowry may have the best claim, statistically - see two posts below.)
And on it went. It was a pointless, but harmless, debate. This week, Waiters copped to simply throwing gas on the fire for the sake of getting people riled up. As he told The Cleveland Plain Dealer:
Everything was too quiet so I had to stir up something with Washington. People have been missing the action so I had to stir up something. You know me. But at the end of the day, I'm here. I'm ready. I'm ready for war. I was born ready. We're all ready.
There's nothing wrong with stirring the pot, but Waiters saying it was "too quiet" is hilarious considering all that's happened in Cleveland this offseason.
If nothing else, Beal and Waiters have given everyone a story to check in on occasionally during the season, and provided some entertaining debate fodder for the early part of the preseason.
