Gay on Grizzlies' controversial game-winner: 'I guess the rules ain't the rules for us'

With 0.3 seconds left on the clock on Thursday, the Memphis Grizzlies were able to score an unlikely game-winner against the Sacramento Kings on a quick inbounds alley-oop play.

It was a creative look, a nice play call and a bit of a defensive breakdown on the part of the Kings. It was a great finish by Courtney Lee, too.

There's also a chance it shouldn't have counted, depending on who's judging the play. Kings forward Rudy Gay, for one, thinks they got the short end of the stick.

There are two potential issues with the play.

The first is that Lee may have held the ball for longer than 0.3 seconds, which is about the theoretical minimum for a player to get a shot off. Uproxx Sports estimated he was in contact with the ball for 0.43 seconds, based on high-frame rate PVR recordings. That would mean the clock started late, and the Grizzlies were the beneficiaries of human error (and at home, which surely lends itself to conspiracy theories).

The other is that Ryan Hollins appears to have tipped the inbound pass ever so slightly, which, while hardly noticeable, should have started the clock earlier than when Lee got the ball. It would have been tough for an official to see it in real time, but it certainly looks to be the case on replay, which the officials have access to.

In any case, there's not much to do now but complain or get over it. Sorry, Rudy.
