O'Neal needs 2-3 weeks to make choice, Mavs unsure if he'll come
Count Mark Cuban among those who couldn't make heads or tails of Jermaine O'Neal's speech on Twitter last week.
The 36-year-old free agent center responded to rumors about his potential return for a 19th season by saying the decision, and location, would be family decisions. He also said he's ready to contribute, should he decide to come back.
With a hole at the backup center spot and with O'Neal listing his residence as being in Dallas, Cuban's Mavericks would seem to be heavy favorites to land O'Neal.
"I don't know if he wants to come here," Cuban said on the weekend, admitting the team is searching for an additional big man. "A lot of decisions to be made before then ... When we get the right guy, we'll get the right guy. No rush."
Right now, Greg Smith is the lone backup to Tyson Chandler, and with Chandler sidelined with back spasms, the team has dusted off Charlie Villanueva as a frontcourt option. Dirk Nowitzki has played some center, too, though he has some thoughts on that idea.
The team needs help inside, and O'Neal could certainly provide it. The Cleveland Cavaliers are also said to have interest after losing Anderson Varejao for the season, but O'Neal told North East Ohio Media Group that he won't be making a final decision for another two or three weeks.
