J.R. Smith on not knowing Cavs' playbook: 'When in doubt, shoot the ball'
Whether J.R. Smith can prove effective for the Cavaliers on the court remains to be seen, but the enigmatic shooting guard is already proving his worth as a quote machine on Day 1 in Cleveland.
Smith, who averages 21.6 field-goal attempts per 100 possessions, has never been shy about chucking away, and that likely won't change in Cleveland, even with LeBron James, Kevin Love and Kyrie Irving around.
And considering he's a solid 3-point shooter, who's replacing a chucker who couldn't shoot in Dion Waiters, it won't take long for the Cavs to get used to their new teammate.
Smith was an effective player on the 2012-13 New York Knicks, who won 54 games and a playoff series, with Smith taking home Sixth Man of the Year honors.
One interesting wrinkle regarding Smith and the Cavs is that he'll be playing alongside Shawn Marion, who was on the receiving end of one of Smith's finer moments.
Smith was fined $50,000 for untying Marion's shoelace during a game last January, after he had already been warned by the league about such stunts. Marion said Wednesday the incident was overblown and Smith shouldn't have even been fined for it.
"He should've paid for half of it then," Smith said when told of Marion's comments.
