Ty Lawson arrested on suspicion of DUI
Denver Nuggets point guard Ty Lawson was arrested early Friday morning on suspicion of driving under the influence, according to multiple reports.
Lawson is said to have been pulled over driving 61 mph in a 35-mph zone at 1:19 a.m. MT in Denver. Court documents reportedly say that Lawson admitted to having consumed alcohol and consented to a field sobriety test, which he failed, after which he refused a chemical test.
Lawson was cited for speeding, DUI and careless driving. He has a prior arrest for a DUI in Missouri and was cited for underage drinking and driving in college at UNC. Lawson was jailed at his own request.
The Nuggets had a team function Thursday night which is believed to have ended at 10 p.m.
The Nuggets released the following statement on the arrest:
We have been made aware of an incident involving Ty Lawson early this morning. Per team policy and out of respect for the legal process, we will have no further comment at this time.
Lawson, 27, is averaging 16.7 points and a career-high 9.9 assists in 41 games.
He will not be with the team for Friday's game against the Boston Celtics, but will return on Saturday and await a ruling from the league (not the Nuggets) on potential disciplinary action.
