Anthony Davis out Monday with shoulder sprain
The right shoulder sprain Anthony Davis suffered when he took a nasty spill on Saturday will sideline him for Monday's game against the Utah Jazz, the team announced.
The New Orleans Pelicans power forward will miss his sixth game of the season, having previously suffered through minor groin and toe issues.
The Pelicans were surging before Davis got knocked out of Saturday's game against the Chicago Bulls, having won seven of nine (including this preposterous walk-off) to make things hairier for fellow Western Conference playoff bubble-dwellers the Phoenix Suns and Oklahoma City Thunder.
The Pelicans led the Bulls 32-30 when Davis got hurt, and were outscored 77-40 thereafter. It was the continuation of a season-long trend, which has seen the Pelicans outscore opponents by 5.5 points per 100 possessions while Davis in on the floor, and get waxed by an average of 8.2 points when he sits.
To put it in starker terms, the Pelicans transform from something like a top-five team with Davis to something like the New York Knicks without him. And even though they've managed a respectable 2-3 record when he doesn't play, two of those losses came against the Knicks and the Philadelphia 76ers, who are a combined 22-81.
The Jazz have made for a frisky opponent of late, and with Jrue Holiday still sidelined with a stress reaction and Ryan Anderson also listed as doubtful due to elbow soreness, the Pelicans' 2-0 record against them this season means approximately zilch.
