Fans create Knicks4Sale.com pushing for sale of team
New York sports fans are getting angrier by the day.
The same group who created a campaign calling for the New York Jets to fire general manager John Idzik have switched their focus to the hardwood, creating Knicks4Sale.com, a site pushing for owner James Dolan to sell the team.
Dolan's offensive email in response to a disgruntled fan is the impetus for the website, which hopes to raise enough money in donations to put up a billboard near Madison Square Garden. The website urges Dolan to sell the New York Knicks and buy the Brooklyn Nets, hoping to transplant the franchise's awful personnel, incompetent management and terrible coaching to another borough.
The site was created by Jason and Jared Koeppel, Greg Kohler and Dan Filopwitz.
Jason Koeppel explained the group's mission to Mike Mazzeo of ESPN New York:
This email that he had the nerve to send to one of his fans was the moment. We talked last night - the four of us - and just said, you know what, we've had enough and we've gotta do something.
I've been a Knick fan my whole life, and the past 15 years - except for that one season where we won one playoff series - have just been a nightmare. We've been patient, and the cost of going to games has just skyrocketed to the point of being completely out of control, so we don't attend as many games anymore, but we definitely watch on TV, and it's just one terrible season after the other.
We're sick of having Dolan around. We're sick of his meddling. He's an embarrassment. And it's embarrassing to us to read the email that he sent to a fan, so we just felt like it was time to embarrass him.
This campaign has little chance of actually working, but if the group can raise the billboard funds expeditiously, they may be able to give Dolan a public relations black eye, considering the Knicks are hosting the All-Star Game on Sunday.
