NBA adding fashion show to All-Star Weekend

Andrew Richardson-USA TODAY Sports

With NBA All-Star Weekend taking place during Fashion Week - and both in New York - coupled with the fact that players are getting more daring in their wardrobe by the season, the timing just makes sense.

For the first time, the NBA will hold a fashion show of its own at All-Star Weekend. James Harden, Klay Thompson and DeMarcus Cousins will be among the eight players competing in the event, which will be filmed on Friday and will air at 6:30 p.m. on TNT on Saturday.

LeBron James' production company will produce the one-hour special, which will have Charles Barkley, Kenny Smith and WNBA player Elene Delle Donne as judges, according to The Associated Press. The eight participants will go through three rounds to determine a winner, though the specifics are unclear.

It's a smart move from the NBA, whose players have responded to the David Stern-imposed dress code of 2005 by becoming incredibly fashionable in many cases. Mileage may vary with the looks put forth by certain players, but they've collectively done enough to have sock, tie and underwear lines operated by NBA players.

The real question for the event is this: How can they do an NBA fashion show without Russell Westbrook and Swaggy P?

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week takes place in New York from Feb. 11-19.
