The Philadelphia 76ers selected Bowling Green power forward Richaun Holmes with the No. 37 overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft on Thursday night.
Few players elevated themselves more in the pre-draft process than Holmes, who seemed a second-round afterthought once the college season ended. Measuring a 7-foot-1.5 wingspan and 9-foot standing reach, Holmes clearly has the size for the four, and his body comes NBA-ready. He may even be able to play some center, which would be great, considering that's more his game.
It's tough to see what the Sixers - who have an embarrassment of young bigs - will do with him, but he fits the mold of springy hybrid bigs, along with guys like JaKarr Sampson and Jerami Grant, they employed sporadically to half-decent effect last season. They'll probably be able to find some minutes, somewhere, for Holmes.
His biggest asset is his shot-blocking, as his length and bounce helped him turn away 6 percent of opposing 2-point attempts when he was on the floor over three years with Bowling Green. Holmes is a bit raw offensively and just beginning to develop an exterior game, but at No. 37, even a defense-only reserve is a nice find.
