The Miami Heat selected Tennessee shooting guard Josh Richardson with the No. 40 overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft on Thursday night.

It was the second wing player the Heat drafted, selecting Duke's Justise Winslow at No. 10.

The rare senior who's still perceived to have upside, Richardson was said to have impressed in the pre-draft workout process. With a big leap in scoring in his fourth season and an improved outside jump shot over his last two seasons, the 21-year-old may yet have a role as a reserve guard.

He has the athleticism for the job and uses his 6-foot-10 wingspan well in defending either guard spot, but he'll need to add significant strength if teams want him to have the flexibility to guard small forwards. That could help him finish better at the rim, too, though his inability to shoot off the bounce may mean he just doesn't have the ball in his hands a lot.

With few obvious slam dunks left at No. 40, it's a fair gambit to roll the dice that Richardson can continue improving.
