Celtics sign Chris Babb, waive Shavlik Randolph
Look no further for proof of the D-League's growth than this: With Chris Babb getting signed by the Boston Celtics on Monday, there have now been a record 44 D-League call-ups this season.
The Celtics signed Babb to a multi-year deal, waiving Shavlik Randolph to create the requisite roster spot. Any years beyond this season on Babb's deal are almost surely of the non-guaranteed variety.
A 6-foot-5 shooting guard out of Penn State and Iowa State, Babb went undrafted in 2013 but landed with the Celtics for a cup of coffee in 2014 after a successful D-League stint. He failed to crack the roster this summer and headed back to the D-League, once again playing well enough to earn a look from Boston, though he'll remain with Maine for the time being.
In 14 games with Boston last season, Babb averaged 1.6 points in 9.4 minutes, shooting 26.7 percent from the floor. In 78 career D-League games, he's averaged 14 points, 5.8 rebounds and three assists, hitting 36.6 percent of his threes.
Randolph, acquired in the three-team Austin Rivers trade on Jan. 15, appeared in five games for the Celtics, scoring seven points and grabbing 12 rebounds in 25 minutes.
