Copeland apologizes for being out at 4 a.m., recovering after being stabbed
Indiana Pacers forward Chris Copeland is laid up in a New York City hospital's intensive care unit, recovering from knife wounds to his abdomen, left hand and left elbow, as well as a reported elbow fracture.
Copeland suffered the injuries when he was attacked outside a Chelsea nightclub early Wednesday morning and underwent surgery Wednesday night.
He released a statement Thursday morning thanking those who have supported him and vowing to return even stronger.
"I just want to thank everyone for their well wishes and prayers," he said in the statement, given to ESPN's Josina Anderson. "I'm overwhelmed with the outpouring of support. I look forward to coming back stronger than ever. Thank you."
Copeland later added an additional statement, through the Pacers official PR outlet, in which he apologized for being out late and inadvertently putting himself in harm's way:
"I also want to apologize to everyone, particularly the NBA and the Pacers for my bad choice at being out at that time. I am doing as well as can be expected and I will work hard to make a full recovery."
Copeland is expected to remain in the ICU for two or three more days.
The suspect in the stabbing, 22-year-old Shezoy Bleary, was taken into custody and charged with assault and criminal possession of a weapon.
