Ahead of his third season in the NBA, Nick Calathes may be looking for a new home. Question is: will it be in Memphis, Dallas, or overseas?
The 26-year-old combo guard, who served primarily as Mike Conley's backup with the Memphis Grizzlies last season, fielded a call from the Dallas Mavericks as soon as the free-agency period kicked off at midnight on July 1.
Ahead of that call, the Grizziles extended a qualifying offer to Calathes before the June 30 deadline. By doing so, they possess the right to match any offer he receives from other teams vying for his services.
Calathes has played internationally in the past, most notably for Greek League superpower Panathinaikos prior to coming back to the United States to join the Grizzlies for the 2013-14 season.
In May, a report from Spain claimed Calathes wanted to return to Europe this offseason, leaving the NBA in the rear-view mirror. He refuted the report, stating "the NBA is my first priority."
Calathes averaged 4.2 points, 1.8 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 1.1 steals in 14.4 minutes in 58 games last season.
