The Phoenix Suns are no longer clearing cap space in the hopes of luring LaMarcus Aldridge, but a deal is a deal, and the team officially traded Marcus Morris, Reggie Bullock, and Danny Granger to the Detroit Pistons on Thursday.
The Suns will receive a 2020 second-round draft pick in the transaction, which was reportedly first agreed to on July 2. With the NBA's moratorium on player movement lifted Thursday, the agreement became a done deal.
The move was intended as a cap-clearing maneuver for the Suns, who had just agreed to terms with free agent center Tyson Chandler and were considered legitimate contenders for Aldridge's services.
Aldridge decided to sign with the San Antonio Spurs instead.
As for the Pistons, Bullock is still on his rookie scale contract, Granger will enter the 2015-16 season on an expiring contract, and in Morris, they acquired a quality forward on a long-term, team-friendly deal.
The 25-year-old averaged career-highs of 10.4 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 1.8 assists with the Suns last season, and he's converted more than 36 percent of his 3-point attempts in his career - something that surely appealed to Stan Van Gundy.
With Phoenix's hopes for Aldridge gone and the biggest names in free agency off the board, this deal appears to be a clear victory for Van Gundy's Pistons, who acquired legitimate assets for a distant future second-rounder.
