Pelicans agree to 2-year deal with Alonzo Gee

Alonzo Gee's summer is far less adventurous this time around.

The New Orleans Pelicans have signed the free-agent forward to a two-year contract, Gee's representatives announced Friday. The deal is worth $2.75 million, according to a report from Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports, and contains a player option for the second year.

The reported salary puts Gee just above the league minimum for his amount of service time, meaning they may have used a chunk of their remaining Mid-Level Exception to sign him.

Gee getting some security early in July is much different than last summer, when he played the role of Luke Ridnour. Ridnour was traded four times this offseason and subsequently waived, while Gee was dealt three times, then waived, signed, and traded again in-season.

That whirlwind summer for Gee included a brief stop with the Pelicans, who acquired him from the Cleveland Cavaliers and swiftly sent him to the Houston Rockets. His tour was made possible by a large non-guaranteed salary for 2014-15, and Gee will now hold the power of a player option rather than be subject to the whims of an organization next summer.

The 28-year-old will provide wing depth for a Pelicans team that desperately needed some on the cheap. A solid perimeter defender who is sometimes susceptible to bullying from larger forwards, Gee finally found enough consistency with his 3-point stroke in 2014-15 to be considered a "3-and-D" player, albeit in a small sample.

Over 331 career games in six seasons with five teams, Gee has averaged 7.3 points and 3.3 rebounds in 22.2 minutes, knocking down 33.2 percent of his looks from outside.
