Nuggets sign Wilson Chandler to reported 4-year, $46-million extension

The Denver Nuggets have signed swingman Wilson Chandler to a multiyear extension, the team announced Saturday.

Terms were not released by the Nuggets, but Chandler will reportedly earn $46 million over the next four seasons, reports Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports.

Ordinarily, teams can only sign players to three-year extensions. However, since the Nuggets are far below the cap, they were able to renegotiate his existing 2015-16 salary as part of his extension. The contract will carry through until 2019.

Given the escalating salary cap, Chandler's extension is more than reasonable. The deal should cover the remainder of his prime and should only represent roughly 10 percent of the salary cap in 2017-18, when the cap's projected to reach $108 million.

Chandler has been a strong contributor for the Nuggets over the past five seasons. He's not a spectacular scorer or a lockdown defender, but Chandler can create his own look, he's a decent 3-point shooter, and he can finish above the hoop, despite being somewhat shy of contact.

The ability to adequately defend multiple positions is another weapon in Chandler's arsenal. He can reasonably defend most small-ball power forwards, although his best position is on the wing.

Last year, Chandler averaged 13.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 1.7 assists in 31.7 minutes per game. He shot 34.2 percent from deep and posted a PER of 13.2.
