Boston Celtics point guard Isaiah Thomas underwent surgery on his left wrist in mid-June, says head coach Brad Stevens.

"I don't know exactly what the deal was, but he just had a little cyst removed from his wrist," Stevens told Jay King of MassLive during shootaround at Las Vegas Summer League.

"It was something that we knew at the end of the year they would have to (remove it). It's a small minor thing, so they had to take care of it."

Stevens added that Thomas is "well ahead of schedule."

Thomas landed on the Celtics after starting last season with the Phoenix Suns. Thomas was part of a failed three-headed point guard tandem, which saw too much overlap of skills in a crowded backcourt. The fallout from the failed experiment saw Thomas dealt to Boston for a first-round pick.

Thomas instantly became a fan-favorite in Boston. He served as a sparkplug off the bench, chipping in with 19 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 5.4 assists in 26 minutes per game. Thomas played a major role in the Celtics' 20-11 record following the All-Star break, which landed them a playoff berth.

In recognition of his efforts, Thomas was named as the runner-up for Sixth Man of the Year behind winner Lou Williams.
