Report: Nuggets, Jameer Nelson reach agreement on 3-year, $13.5M deal

Curiously, the Denver Nuggets continue to strengthen the point guard position, despite the presence of Ty Lawson.

In addition to drafting Emmanuel Mudiay with the seventh overall pick, the Nuggets have also reached an agreement to re-sign veteran Jameer Nelson to a three-year deal, Shams Charania of RealGM reports.

Nelson will earn $13.5 million over the life of the contract, reports Marc Stein of ESPN.

Nelson reportedly declined his $2.85-million player option to become an unrestricted free agent this summer. However, given Lawson's rather public grumblings about his future in Denver, the Nuggets apparently felt the need to acquire some security at point.

The 33-year-old bounced around three stops last season and eventually settled down in Denver. Nelson opened the season with the Dallas Mavericks, but was moved to the Boston Celtics in a package for Rajon Rondo. The Nuggets then acquired him in early January.

Nelson fared well in Denver. He averaged 9.6 points, 1.9 rebounds, and 3.7 assists in 20.6 minutes per game. He shoot decently from deep, connecting on 35.4 percent of his 3-point tries.

The endgame for Denver seems obvious. They'll likely find a trade partner for Lawson, before handing the reins to Mudiay, while Nelson slots in as the backup.
