The noisiest offseason in the history of the notoriously quiet San Antonio Spurs continued Tuesday, when the team announced the re-signing of Danny Green.
Green was one of the first commitments of the free-agent period, verbally agreeing to a deal that's reported to be worth $45 million over four years on July 1. That makes Green one of the few Spurs who took a sizable discount to help land LaMarcus Aldridge, though later market developments suggest Green may have been able to secure more money elsewhere.
That's an easier sacrifice to make when it's to stay with one of a small handful of title contenders for 2015-16. The Spurs sacrificed some depth to retain Green and sign Aldridge, but they boast one of the best rosters in all of basketball and remain a perennial favorite.
The 28-year-old Green is an elite perimeter defender who is impossibly accurate from deep. He hit 42.3 percent of his threes over the past four seasons and understands the Spurs' system inside out. Green took on a slightly larger role in 214-15, averaging a career-high 11.7 points.
Green stands to enter the season as the team's starting shooting guard and should see an even larger number of open corner looks with Aldridge and Tim Duncan threatening on the blocks or at the elbows. This past season, Green averaged 4.6 3-point attempts per game that were classified as open or wide open by NBA.com, and he canned 43.5 percent of those attempts.
