J.R. Smith performs better when Lil Wayne releases album, numbers show
J.R. Smith's performance on the hardwood is greatly influenced by Lil Wayne and whether the four-time Grammy winner drops a new album or mixtape.
In games taking place on the day of or immediately following a new Lil Wayne release, Smith takes his game up a notch and puts up numbers well above his career averages, according to Hashtag Important's Kenny Ducey.
"Now, I can’t guarantee J.R. listened to these albums and mixtapes before he played in his next game. I can say, though, his shot totals show he’s a bit juiced up in these contests," Ducey wrote.
"One thing that was evident during the study was that J.R. hit a hot streak a couple of these times. Most notably, his 32-point showing in Boston in 2013 was followed by a 35-point outing, and then a 37-point performance."
Is it merely a coincidence? Smith has said in the past that Lil Wayne is his go-to rapper.
The 29-year-old trigger-happy shooting guard remains without a contract after finishing the 2014-15 season with the Cleveland Cavaliers, although general manager David Griffin has been vocal about wanting him back with the team.
It's not an album release, but perhaps some courtside appearances at Quicken Loans Arena by the world-renowned lyricist will bring out a more consistent, aggressive Smith should he return to the Cavaliers next season.
