The Orlando Magic are nearing a deal to acquire Miami Heat point guard Shabazz Napier, according to Yahoo Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski.
The Heat will get a protected future second-round pick in return.
Napier, the Heat's first-round selection in 2014, played in 51 games this past season, averaging 5.1 points and 2.5 assists. He shot 36.4 percent from deep. He was shut down in April after undergoing sports hernia surgery.
The catalyst of Connecticut's 2014 NCAA championship squad, Napier was picked No. 24 by Charlotte and traded to Miami in that year's draft in a move widely viewed to be an attempt to appease LeBron James, who had praised Napier's game repeatedly. James bolted for the Cleveland Cavaliers two weeks later.
The Heat have veteran Mario Chalmers under contract for one more season as a backup to starting point guard Goran Dragic, who re-signed this month for a reported five years and $85 million. Still, there is chatter that the team may try and move Chalmers and Chris Andersen as well. The Heat, hard up against the luxury tax, save themselves $1.3 million next season by moving Napier.
