After sharing one tumultuous season together, the Dragic brothers are splitting up.
The Miami Heat traded shooting guard Zoran Dragic to the Boston Celtics, the team announced Monday. Heat guard Goran Dragic - who signed a five-year extension this summer - was fine with the move, as Zoran wanted more playing time elsewhere, ESPN's Dan Le Batard reports.
Miami receives a protected 2020 second-round pick from Boston, while the Celtics receive cash considerations and a protected 2019 second-round selection.
The move helps the Heat nudge within $8 million of ducking under the luxury tax, while freeing up a roster spot for 40th pick Josh Richardson.
For the Celtics, taking on Zoran's contract allows them to pick up an extra pick. They intend to waive Zoran, Adam Himmelsbach of the Boston Globe reports.
The 26-year-old Zoran made the leap to the NBA last season following an impressive showing at the FIBA World Cup with Slovenia. Zoran signed a two-year deal with the Phoenix Suns which united him with his brother, and the two were later dealt to Miami at the trade deadline.
Zoran struggled to find playing time, logging just 75 total minutes last season in 16 games. Given the sample size, it's impossible to read too much into his ability to contribute at the NBA level.
However, Zoran did put up a promising game in the Heat's final contest of the season. With the starters resting, Dragic played 41 minutes and scored 22 points on 9-of-17 from the floor.
Like his brother, Zoran is a left-handed, attack-minded guard and at 6-foot-5, he possesses good size to attack defenses. He's a decent creator and a passable spot-up threat.
