The New York Knicks have agreed to a one-year deal with Sasha Vujacic, Shams Charania of RealGM reports, firing up "The Machine" for another NBA return.
While initial speculation was that the contract may simply be a training camp deal, Charania reports that Vujacic will get a guaranteed $1.35 million, which is the veteran minimum for his level of service time.
Reports surfaced Thursday that the Knicks had reached out to Vujacic, who split last season between Italy, Spain, and Turkey after failing to secure a gig stateside. He had a two-game cup of coffee with the Los Angeles Clippers in 2013-14, and has otherwise been playing overseas since the end of the 2010-11 season.
That's not to say Vujacic doesn't have NBA talent. The No. 27 overall pick in 2004 has achieved moderate success in his eight seasons in the league, averaging 5.6 points, 1.9 rebounds, and 1.3 assists while knocking down 37.1 percent of his long-range looks and playing serviceable defense.
His issues came inside the arc, where he shot 42.3 percent in 478 games and largely failed to set up teammates for productive shots. Those concerns may have been allayed some with his international performance, as Vujacic averaged 15.7 points on 45.4 percent shooting across three teams in 2014-15, kicking in 3.8 assists per game.
The Knicks may see Vujacic as an asset for the triangle offense, with which he's familiar from his Los Angeles Lakers days. But the 31-year-old doesn't push their ceiling much higher, takes a roster spot that could have been used on a high-upside prospect, and may have some amends to make with Carmelo Anthony.
