Josh McRoberts says he's close to 100 percent healthy
After landing a four-year deal with the Miami Heat last summer, power forward Josh McRoberts' debut was promptly cut short by injuries.
Bookended by toe surgery and a torn meniscus, McRoberts played in only 17 games last season, and was nowhere close to the form he showed with the Charlotte Bobcats in 2013-14.
But while returning to full strength may be out of reach for the eight-year veteran, McRoberts told Kyle Neddenriep of the Indianapolis Star that he's about as close as he's going to be.
"I don't think I'm ever going to see 100 percent," McRoberts said. "I've played too long to be 100 percent, but I'm getting pretty close."
McRoberts also spoke to the frustration of last season, in which he was unable to make an impact on his new club due to factors largely outside his control.
"It's been pretty frustrating," McRoberts said. "I had toe surgery after the season in Charlotte so I was still kind of recovering from that going into last season.
"In December, I finally started to feel like I was on top of that and feeling better. I had a little momentum going and then I got hurt again. It was a frustrating time last season. I'm ready to put that behind me and get close to 100 percent, or as close as I can be to 100 percent."
A healthy McRoberts would benefit the Heat immensely. Two seasons ago, he traded as a versatile power forward who could stretch the floor and create for others. He averaged 8.5 points, 4.8 rebounds and 4.3 assists while shooting 36.1 percent from deep. His diverse skill set earned him his contract with the Heat.
McRoberts projects to slot in as the first big off the bench, behind starters Chris Bosh and Hassan Whiteside. Equipped with a star-studded roster, the Heat could threaten for a top seed in the Eastern Conference should they manage to duck the injury issues that plagued them last year.
