Pelicans' Davis, Wizards' Wall coordinating player-run minicamps
With Team USA obligations behind them, Anthony Davis and John Wall have shifted their focus to the development of their respective NBA teams this week.
Wall kicked off a four-day minicamp - which he organized himself - on Sunday in Los Angeles. As the leader of his promising squad, the Washington Wizards' All-Star point guard showed both initiative and a desire to ensure his teammates are on the same page.
"All the guys are going to come out," Wall told CSN Washington's Ben Standig on Saturday.
Although Wall did not confirm which of his running mates would be in attendance, he inferred that Nene, Drew Gooden, and Kris Humphries, among others, would be heading to L.A.
Wall's penchant for organizing team bonding activities doesn't end here, either. The 24-year-old has also encouraged his teammates to arrive to the Wizards' preseason training camp ahead of time.
"I'm setting up all these things," Wall said. "Making sure guys are getting to training camp two weeks early. Make sure we're playing pickup, getting into shape, doing those types of things. That's what I'm willing to do and have some fun with it."
With regard to his individual goals, Wall aims to maintain a clean bill of health for the 2015-16 season. "Going into a season healthy, that's the biggest key for me," he explained. "I think the only time I was really healthy was my rookie year and the lockout year. I understand what it takes to take care of my body. My chef has been with me in the summer. Just trying to enjoy myself, but work on my game and get better every day."
After injuring his left wrist during last year's playoffs, Wall claims that he feels "perfectly fine now."
Elsewhere in the City of Angels, The Brow and teammate Quincy Pondexter have joined forces in an effort to lure their New Orleans Pelicans comrades in for voluntary workouts.
"Quincy and I had been talking about getting the team together and just reunite for a few days," Davis told reporters prior to Monday's first informal practice session. "We made some calls, and a lot of guys jumped on board. It'll be great to get back in the gym with the guys and get some work in before training camp rolls around in a few weeks."
Pondexter - a role player and natural leader - outlined the reasoning behind the summertime gathering: "We're working on building something special. We have that family environment you want as a team and just enjoy being around each other."
With a new head coach and a different offensive scheme in tow, the players see the benefit in meeting ahead of training camp in order to familiarize themselves with Alvin Gentry's uptempo style of play.
"You could see how it is during summer league, with that fast pace," said shooting guard Eric Gordon. "I'm sure we'll do it in a more organized fashion, once the season comes around. But it's really going to be fast-paced and a fun style of play. I think it's going to be fun for everybody, from players to coaches to fans."
The Pelicans open the 2015-16 season with a matchup against the reigning champion Golden State Warriors - Gentry's former team - on Oct. 27.
