Report: Grizzlies, Michael Holyfield agree to non-guaranteed, $525K deal

Beth Hall-US PRESSWIRE

The Memphis Grizzlies have agreed to terms with center Michael Holyfield on a non-guaranteed, $525,000 contract with limited injury protection, according to Basketball Insiders' Eric Pincus.

Holyfield, 22, played four years at Sam Houston State, averaging 8.5 points and 8.1 rebounds on 60.2 percent shooting during his final season.

Listed at 6-foot-11 and 270 pounds, Holyfield would give Memphis a third option at center behind Marc Gasol and newly signed Brandan Wright should he ultimately crack the roster.

However, the Grizzlies already have 14 guaranteed contracts on their roster, along with JaMychal Green's $150,000 guaranteed contract.

As Pro Basketball Talk's Dan Feldman acknowledges, the team can always waive Holyfield and assign his rights to Memphis' D-League affiliate, the Iowa Energy.

There aren't many viable options left on the open market who can play the five-spot, so the Grizzlies may have to get creative if they want someone with more of a track record to be the third center on their depth chart.
