Stephen Curry wants to finish his career with the Warriors
After winning the championship this summer, Golden State Warriors point guard Stephen Curry has no intentions to leave the only NBA club he's ever known.
Curry told the Sporting News on Monday that he's hoping to re-sign with the Warriors once his bargain contract comes to an end in 2017. The prospect of being courted in free agency does not entice the league's reigning MVP.
He took it a step further on Tuesday. Curry answered questions from fans on Facebook and he again pledged his allegiance to the Bay.
Q: Do you ever think you'll leave Golden State?
A: Hopefully not. Hopefully everything works out and I can finish my career here. I probably have like 10 good years left.
Curry's comments must come as music to the ears of Warriors fans, who toiled through nearly three decades of disappointments before last season's squad – led by Curry – took home the club's first championship since 1975.
With most of their young core locked in for the future, Golden State is primed to dominate the Western Conference for many years to come. The Warriors locked in Klay Thompson last season, re-signed Draymond Green this summer and are reportedly hammering out an extension for Harrison Barnes.
From that perspective, there are very few situations, if any, that are more appealing than what the Warriors can offer to Curry.
Moreover, the Warriors have repeatedly shown confidence in Curry.
They ignored concerns of Curry playing at Davidson (a relatively unheralded basketball program at the time) and drafted him seventh overall in 2009. Then, after a promising start to his career, the Warriors moved a high usage player in Monta Ellis to create more opportunities for Curry. Finally, in 2012, the Warriors handed Curry a four-year extension despite significant concerns about the viability of Curry's formerly frail ankles.
In short, it's no surprise why Curry wants to stay. The Warriors have never given him any reason to leave.
