Heat add John Lucas III, Tre Kelley for training camp
The Miami Heat made a pair of late additions to their training camp roster Monday.
The team announced just ahead of media day it signed John Lucas III and Tre Kelley, almost surely on non-guaranteed training camp deals. Both are point guards, a position where the Heat will have plenty of competition as they search for the third-stringer behind Goran Dragic and Mario Chalmers.
Lucas worked out with the Heat earlier in September, and it was presumed he could parlay those workouts into a camp deal. The 32-year-old appeared in 237 games over seven seasons across five teams and 10 years, a journeyman's career if there ever was one. He spent 21 games with the Detroit Pistons last season, averaging 4.7 points and 2.9 assists in 13 minutes.
Kelley, meanwhile, is a 30-year-old without NBA experience, though he's appeared in summer league and preseason games in the past. Undrafted out of South Carolina in 2007, Kelley spent time in the D-League, Croatia, Greece, Israel, Lebanon, Belgium, China, Turkey, Italy, and Venezuela. He split last season between Turkey and Italy, averaging 15.9 points and 5.4 assists.
The Heat have 13 guaranteed contracts on their books and seven players in camp on non-guaranteed deals.
