Stan Van Gundy rips into Pistons players for 'selfish performance'
Don't tell Detroit Pistons head coach Stan Van Gundy that preseason is meaningless.
Van Gundy tore into his team following the Pistons' 93-83 loss to the Brooklyn Nets on Thursday. In particular, Van Gundy singled out the team's unwillingness to share the ball.
From the Detroit Free Press:
I told them in there - that was the first thing - we're not playing together at all. I thought it was a very selfish performance, and guys wouldn't just pass the ball to open men. They wanted to see if they could take one more dribble to get their own shot, so the passing angles were gone.
Unsurprisingly, starting point guard Reggie Jackson, who landed a massive five-year, $80-million extension this offseason, caught the majority of Van Gundy's wrath.
"He was not good at all," Van Gundy said of Jackson. "He was forcing everything."
Jackson battled through a sore Achilles to finish with six assists and six turnovers. He was a team-worst minus-12 in 29 minutes and shot just 3-of-10 from the field.
As a team, the Pistons finished with 19 assists on the night, but they shot just 41 percent from the field and largely struggled to generate offense. Detroit also compounded its problem by committing 21 turnovers.
Van Gundy is undoubtedly looking to spark his team's offense, which ranked a pedestrian 17th in the league last season. More passing could potentially solve the Pistons' woes, as they ranked 22nd in passes per game.
